Where in the World is Ukraine?

Many of you are probably wondering where Ukraine is... here is a map that should give you a little bit better idea. Ukraine is situated between Romania and Russia.

April 26, 1986
It may not be a notable date to some, but it is actually a very significant date in the histories and lives of many people our age and older. This was the day of the nuclear incident at Chornobyl. It is located 60 miles north of Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv, very close to the Belarusian border. Ironically, Belarus suffered more than Ukraine due to wind patterns.

"Ukraine", or "The Ukraine": That is the question
It seems most Americans refer to it as "The Ukraine", but in fact that implies the former Soviet region. Ukraine has been an independent country since 1991, and the correct reference to the country is simply "Ukraine".

Ukraine Facts...
  • "Ukraine" means borderland
  • Largest religious group is Ukrainian Orthodox Church
  • Ukraine is home to one of the largest Jewish communities worldwide
  • Ukraine's currency is the hryvnia
  • Ukraine is the largest country of those fully situated in Europe
